Ho-prah's Book Club

Romance sucks. That is, the traditional idea of what romance is sucks. Fuck flowers, the best first-date gift I ever got was a book my date thought I would like. Hearts and flowers and carriage rides, that stuff can’t hold a candle to showing up at the emergency room with a book and a clean pair of underwear. Love is in the details, which is why I fell head over heels for Rob Sheffield’s Love is a Mix Tape.

Photobucket

I bough the book on a whim (it was 20% off at Barnes and Noble) expecting a light, gimmicky read with lots of music-nerd quibbling. Love is a Mix Tape IS about music, but really it’s about love, the most realistic portrayal of being in love with someone I’ve ever read. I read the whole thing in one night.

Here’s how Sheffield describes the girl of his dreams:

“Renee was a real cool hell-raising Appalachian punk-rock girl. Her favorite song was the Rolling Stone’s Let’s Spend the Night Together. Her favorite album was Pavement’s Slanted and Enchanted. She rooted for the Atlanta Braves and sewed her own silver vinyl pants. She knew which kind of screwdriver was which. She baked pies, but not very often. She could rap Roxanne Shante’s “Go on Girl” all the way through. She called Eudora Welty “Miss Eudora.” She had an MFA in fiction and never got any stories published, but she kept writing them anyway. She bought too many shoes and dyed her hair red. Her voice was full of the frazzle and crackle of music.”

Even more touching than Renee’s cool-girl bravado are her insecurities, and how intimately Sheffield is obviously acquainted with them. The passage I couldn’t get out of my head was the one where Sheffield describes Renee’s reaction to buying a particularly cool pair of shoes in a Boston Fluevog store.

“I told her about the day Renee bought the platform mod creepers and walked down Newbury Street, saying ‘Nobody in Charlottesville has shoes this cool. None of the skinny girls have shoes this cool. That skinny Lori from Georgia doesn’t have shoes this cool.’”

The fact that Renee dies young and unexpectedly makes the story even more affecting. After tearing through this amazing story, Renee was still flouncing through my thoughts and memory, fully fleshed out and moving around. And isn’t that a beautiful reason both for the writing of and the reading of this book? To let the dead get up and dance around.

Buy the Book

That's poetry.

Sounds great! I can't wait to read it.

Have you ever read "Here Kitty Kitty"? I think you'd like it a lot. It's by Jardine Libaire. It's set in NYC and has that gritty kind of love story it seems like you like.

Glad to see you're back and posting! :)

I bought this book ages ago but never got around to reading it, which you've just inspired me to do. My memories (both the good and bad) always have musical accompaniment of some sort.

PS- first time commentor, long time reader. I love reading your blog... I'll admit it's a little voyueristic, but it's also great to read such an unabashedly confident and strong woman.

I will definitely have to check this out. Thanks for the recommendation!

Similarly, have you read Steve Almond's My Life in Heavy Metal? He wrote this one passage about female ejaculation that changed my life.

i just bought this book last week! i saw a review for it when it came out in hardcover months ago and had been dying to read it but was waiting for the paperback to come out. i'm about halfway through right now. definitely a great recommendation.

fyi for the new yorkers: it's $6.50 marked down from $13 at the Strand. downstairs on the review paperbacks shelf.

if you liked this as much as i did, i have a feeling you'd appreciate Hairstyles of the Damned by Joe Meno.
happy new year :)

I agree...romance is for suckers!

Reminds me of High Fidelity. I loved that book for similar reasons. And, really, it is the male answer to chick-lit in my opinion. I might have to check this one out.

I was expecting a totally different posting, like the death of Ethan (gentlemangigolo.blogspot.com), because you are one of the few that have actually talked to him, but no! - let's talk about shitty books :(

I'm usually not a fan or romance, but all the gratuitous music references just might sell me. I'll look into it.

There is no more pointless waste of money than a creative writing MFA. It takes a special kind of idiot to pursue one.

One of the few books to ever make me cry.... I read it in one night too.

Ah! You didn't have to say she died! I want to read it now, but wish I didn't know that going in.

beloved:

I thought about that, but figured since it says she died on the back cover, it was fair game.

You know what, I've never made a mixtape for someone. I wonder why that is.

Sheffield wrote an article in Rolling Stone a long time ago when that book first came out, and his description of his life with Renee and her sudden death, confined to the few pages they gave him, was somehow even more powerful and resonant than the book itself. Check it out if you can, it's probably online somewhere.

CCG- you're forgiven then. ;-)

Now i'm all misty.

Yeah Sheffield wrote for years in many music magazines,he's cool!
But you're all missing the point here, maybe some of you remember but he's all into music, and making a mix tape for someone takes a lot of time, and it means you really love someone enough to, want to impress them with your knowledge of music, the music you love to turn other people on to.
I have not read the book yet,but will seek it out,but I've read his reviews/articles for many years.
I think he wrote some pieces about how his wife or girlfriend passed away, and his bond with her over music.
So,College Callgirl writes about a book, why is that so bad? You all probably could do a little more reading, instead of just looking at pictures of porn...
The last party I attended,no one seemed to read any good books, and so it was hard to converse with people who had really nothing good to say about anything...just a thought.
Reading makes you a little more interesting of a person. I don't think it's nerdy,it's cool.

I bought this book last year. I cannot remember when but I loved this book also.

And a lot of the music brought up in it.

It's a great read.

Happy New Years to you!

Thank you so much for the recommendation. I ordered this little gem at the library and eagerly read it within 48 hours. Sheffield took me back to the '90's...ah..life was so much better way back then! Less corporate and before American Idol dictated only ONE STYLE of Music! Some people like to knit or make homemade preserves, but I too, am the master of the mix tape (er...now it is the CD)I am the DJ, I am what I play!

Also, thank you everyone on this board for your book recommendations as well. I now have 4 items coming my way, and I can't wait.

College Girl: of course we take immense perverse delight in the sordid details, but somehow you manage to bring a sense of humanity to it all, giving us a glimpse of your soul. I hope that you will continue to entertain and enlighten us in the New Year! Good luck to you!

This is totally off topic but I'm just wondering if you know what happened to gentleman gigolo's blog? I was very surprised to see it just completely disappear. It was such a good blog and I kinda miss it.

Doesn't everyone call her "Miss Eudora"?

I love things that stay with you after you read them or see them. That's how I judge movies. If they still move me the day after I see it, then I know how good it is. Atonement did that to me. I was still thinking about it three days afterwards, it was constantly on my mind.

A friend of mine recommended this - I will have to get round to reading it!

i loved this book so much and will try and find that article now

gentleman gigolo's blog didn't just disappear - I happened to come across it (I checked about once a week for new entries) and apparently, he died of a drug overdose - or so a friend said. I'm not sure what is true, but there were a lot of conspiracy theories floating around because of his coincinding dates of his prostitution charges and the date of his quote-unquote death on his blog. I feel relatively invested in finding out what happened because I became of regular reader due to the exception CC blog, but it could be many things. Any insight on this would be appreciated! And of course, best wishes Ethan is actually alive and well somewhere.

RE: rebecca

i'm actually quite curious about the whole ethan thing too. the blog's gone but his friend (or ethan himself) did not delete his blogger profile.

if what his friend posted is true, there's no hope of finding an obituary or arrest record (for when he was busted that one time, if he was in fact busted) without his real last name.

the only entry from the blog that appears on google cache is from Nov. 16th. however, i remember that the friend who posted about the OD's e-mail was socalifornication@gmail.com if anyone wants to try to get some info out of him. i know it's kind of weird and OCD, but unsolved mysteries like that just really bug me.

Can't wait to read the book now.

My fave ever gift from a guy after a first date was a fish bowl with goldfish. I hate flowers, all they do is die. So do fish, but that's another story. :-)

I picked this up on your recommendation and enjoyed it. Thanks!

I just bought it this weekend, thinking it might make a good gift for the guy I'm hoping to get back together with. I _love_ it! Partway through I started underlining things and writing comments to him on post-it notes. I see him tonight, but one of the things that made me happy about this book is how cool people can like really dorky stuff (e.g. "Mmm-bop" by Hanson). It's just gorgeous prose.

This book made me cry. I'm a librarian, and no book has done that before.

Thanks for the recommendation, and the lovely review.
