I think most modern urban women have at least one manic episode of obsessive Internet dating. It peaks when we realize we can get free drinks from and have casual sex with a different guy every night of the week and declines when we realize that dating is for the most part a soulless meeting of the genitals that robs us of our scanty dignity.
But before Nerve almost killed my belief in love, I did my time there as well as on Craiglist and Match.com. I also tried out Okcupid, the site that uses geeky match technology to rate your compatibility with partners based on a personality quiz and your answers to the pretty much endless series of questions. I found the quizzes fun, but the daters mostly too....let's be diplomatic and say socially awkward.
Still I am all the new site they're launching today, Crazy Blind Date. You pick an area, answer some simple questions, plug in your schedule and they'll set you up with a blind date in your neighborhood. You upload a picture but your potential date only sees it all blurry until after you meet. You can even give them your cell phone number and your distance from various neighborhoods and they'll text you with spur-of-the moment dates. No word on if you need a Crazy Taxi to get there.
Does this sound really fucking fun to anyone else or I am just a huge nerd?

it sounds very fun. and also could be self selecting toward folks with impetuous streaks.
Matchmaker, Matchmaker make me a match... I'd trust a human match over a machine. The human might actually care about me and my welfare but the machine doesn't give a watt.
So intriguing... is there any asking about personality/interest stuff?
And is everyone who uses it in the next two days going to be readers of this site?
I got the same announcement. As it happens, I'm in London, England right now. But I think I may have to give it a try or two once I'm back home. Heck, if they'd announced it 2-3 days ago, I might have changed my location to London and seen what it could do for me here. I sure as hell haven't had any luck on my own yet!

Yes, they have questions for you to fill out, I think optionally. And, yes, I think I might be artificially flooding the market with sluts and those who love them.
I'm totally terrified and intrigued by this at the same time. And I totally know that I'm going to have a few drinks and do this one night...
It seems like something that only the very, very bored would try.
Uhm, you might be a nerd.
But I still love your writing.
boo on being in a relationship. Not really, but this would have been soooo much fun for me a couple years ago.
If I wasn't taken, I might try this at least once, just to see what kind of crazy they'd match me up with. All that would be missing is the cameras...because we all secretly wish we could be on that stupid Blind Date show some time.
Wow. If I weren't married, I would so do this. And not just because of the chance of randomly getting set up w/ you, either. It sounds just crazy enough to be fun.
I'd be game to try that. I've got a real disadvantage with normal dating sites because I'm good-enough looking in real life, but not photogenic at all, so I'm never willing to upload my picture there. A blurred alternative sounds like a win for me.
And most women and I find conversations enjoyable (at a minimum), so if I could get 'em to split the check sometimes, I woudn't go broke enjoying the diversity. :p
I'm beginning to this we should just start setting up blind dates here and leave out the middleman.

Sounds like a winner that site. I'm probably as much of a nerd as you are then, because it sounds hella fun!
I am now in my own rush of internet dating. Its lavalife for me. Starting to get tired of men who live in their parents basements though. Maybe I'll try this one.
Haha. I was happy to know this is normal behaviour!
i am totally going to get my roommate to do this with me.
how freaking fun!
hopefully it will be nerds who are into this, because i am pretty damn nerdy myself.
huge nerds=hotness.
i *just* saw this today and got so excited about it. I'm glad I'm not the only one. And I totally agree with you on the 'socially awkward' okcupid dates. I just went on one Friday and I'm still reeling from it.
I'd be too afraid my experience would inspire a Law & Order: Ripped from the Headlines episode.
I totally did the streak of socially awkward OKCupid dates. Oh my god. The memories!
It's good to know that other girls do this. I kind of hid it from my friends, who were either dating "real" people they met at frat parties, or nobody.
Actually, my socially awkward dates might have been the best option.
Sounds interesting. I think it would be really cool if you select what type of specific encounter you were looking for. For example friendship, casual sex, dating, etc.
I've done the Nerve thing and the Match thing, so I'm kinda down on online dating for now. Keep us updated on this new site!
Are you going to have to list all of your STDs too? That might limit your options.
boston, new york, san fran and ...austin? i guess austin is pretty big but...?
P.S. austin.... austin massachusetts
little road trip humor
Eh, I did my spell with Match and blind dates when there is nothing there (ahem, most blind dates) are boring as fuck. Who wants to have the same convo with a different dude every stinkin' night?
That said, it sounds like a new approach and a fun site.
I use OkCupid, which actually works great for me perhaps because being a good-looking and socially non-awkward date after a number of socially awkward dates ends up highly in my favor.
But yeah, I found the Crazy Blind Date thing, and signed up for it, and it seriously told me I was being too restrictive by specifying Asian/White and Slim/Athletic/Average. So either (a) it hasn't yet reached any sort of critical mass, or (b) it's really aimed at ugly people that aren't able to find any luck on OkCupid. In which case it's pretty brilliant market expansion.
I went on a blind date once. But then her seeing eye dog bit me....
um you're right about the one obsessive episode of internet dating. Had no idea why I did it, especially since I'm not even social and hate small talk date-like shit. But I went nuts and went on like 3 dates in one week. I started seeing one of them for a month. Then we had sex.
It was the worst sex I ever had.
Online dating--never again! The women I met had great profiles but were total losers in person. One must have been off her meds...
I just have to say... I tried them all.... Seriously, there is a lack of "REAL MAN" dick out there! hehe
I've given up.
OK Cupid has always worked well for me. It matched me up with one of my boyfriends and we've been together for 3.5 years now. It matched me up with 2 ex boyfriends who are still good friends and my other current boyfriend was not met through OKC, but since we both have profiles, OKC does give us a high percentage.
All of my friends are on OKC too and their matching estimates are pretty accurate for how well we all get along.
For all of the options out there, OKC has the best potential because of all the angles it uses to match people up.
Personally, I'd much rather take a chance on someone who I know, before we even meet, that we at least like the same books, hate the same movies, are both non-smokers and child-free-by-choice, than go out mostly at random and pick up on someone simply because I like how he looks in that shirt. Chances are me and the second guy will hate each other, but me and the first guy will at least become friends.
