Can it just not compete with the high concept cable TV we’ve come to expect from channels like Showtime and HBO? “Suburban mom sells pot” and “Family lives in funeral parlor” are simple equations that add up to lots of buzz. Californication doesn't have a "gimmick" except for showing lots of sex, but I'll tell you what it does have: HOT ASS DAVID DUCHOVNY.
I was never into him before, but his character on Californication is so hot he makes my pussy sweat.
He plays disaffected NY cum LA writer Hank Moody, a hilarious badass who alienates everyone around him with his drunken sexploits and propensity to punch first, ask questions later. Also charming is Evan Handler (pretty much the only thing about Sex and the City that still looks good in the post-syndication afterglow) as Moody’s agent. And if achingly hot bad boy Mulder wasn’t enough for you, the show’s got heart, too. Moody’s Crass-T-shirt-wearing daughter is the kid you hope you draw in the reproduction lottery, and his quest to reconcile with his engaged ex feels sweet without being sappy. By the time I got to the finale, I was tearing up and I wasn't even on my period.
I thought this show was gonna suck too, but now I am giving you the College Callgirl guarantee of its watchability: that means if you don’t like the show, you can kick me in the box. The whole first season is on demand on Showtime if you want to find out the fate of my ladyparts.

I also like watching this show. Its not just because David Duchovny is hot. He is! His character just rules. And how despite his drunken debaucheries and cynical outlook on his life and career, his dirty little secret is that he's actually a good person.
I LOVE THIS SHOW...David D. never did anything for me before now, but for some reason he does. I like the "She's gonna blow!" scene.
I don't have Showtime.
Maybe when it gets released on DVD I'll watch it.

Didn't see the show either, and although I'm pretty sure David Duchovny would still no nothing for my genital area, I get the impression it would be worth while to give the series a shot.
I thought that the only thing good about this show was going to be that it gave Evan Handler work, but it sucked me in and got me totally addicted. You called it completely. I love the hotness of Duchovney, and I want to have a kid like Becca. More! More! More!

I love this show too... I kind of type casted him since I watched the x-files a lot but I really love the show and the sense of humor. Reminds me of a friend :) haha
I was highly recommended Californication by a friend.
But it's damn hard to fit in all the quality TV.

I've had the hots for DD since "Red Shoe Diaries". It's on video if you've never seen it, a mid '90's soft-porn Showtime (I think) series. The very first episode has DD as the focus and tells you how he got into kink. Subsequent episodes have him mostly just at the beginning & end. They were uneven - some hotter than hell, some just so-so, and the series only ran a season or two. Look for the first episode and one called "Auto-Erotica".
I currently don't have Showtime but I've seen the ads for this and await its release on DVD.

Just had to comment for the first time. Love, love, love this show. Love it so much I took it upon myself to resurrect the Duchovny teacup photos...anyone remember them? He's beautiful, has great comedic timing and the show's storyline is varied and interesting. Can't ask for more!

My aerial is broken on my TV which leaves me very little to watch.. But I caught an episode of this at my boyfriends.. I LOVED IT! I have been crushing on David Duchovny since he played the delightful Agent Dennis in Twin Peaks
I started watching this show after I found it for free online (believe me, you can find it if you look hard enough). This show is absolutely my new favorite. Never was into David before, but holy hell is he hot in this show. The sex scenes are also like nothing I have ever scene on TV before. Sometimes full episodes are posted on YouTube so don't worry if you don't have Showtime, although I considered getting it because this show is that good.
All my passion for David Duchovny got sucked from the warm space between my loins when one night up late and watching Showtime, I caught the first installment of Zalman King's Red Shoe Diaries. The association with soft core porn turned me off forever.

Absolutely fantastic show - I'm now watching it a second (and some episodes, a third) time with my GF. She gets totally hot and wet watching Duchovny - especially the way his character evolves and becomes more complex, and Karen who she thinks is totally hot, and Charlie and Dani (especially the punishment scenes), and well, just about every aspect.
There have been few aphrodisiacs that have worked as well for us as Californication!

The show was awesome, until the last minute of the season finale. It just didn't ring true with the rest of the season or the characters.
Thank you for making me think about this show again. I loved it so much I'm hesitant to rewatch it for fear it will dilute the impact; therefore, it's a damn good thing it got picked up for a second season.
As for the last minute of the last episode? I think they'll resolve it as a drunken dream and Hank will wake up in a strange bedroom wearing his wife's wedding dress...
